Workshop on “Issues of Secondary Steel Industries” – August 13, 2025, Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi
The Ministry of Steel organized a comprehensive workshop on “Issues of Secondary Steel Industries” at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, on August 13, 2025, to address key challenges and opportunities in the secondary steel sector. The event brought together representatives from major industry associations — Material Recycling Association of India (MRAI), Sponge Iron Manufacturing Association (SIMA), All India Induction Furnaces Association (AIIFA), Chhattisgarh Sponge Iron Manufacturing Association (CGSIMA), and Pellets Manufacturers Association of India (PMAI) — along with steel producers from Secondary Steel Industries (SSIs), policymakers, experts, and industry partners.
The workshop was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Union Minister of Steel, Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy, who emphasized the sector’s role as the backbone of industrial regionalization, contributing significantly to employment and economic growth. He reiterated the national target of 500 million tonnes of steel production by 2047 and highlighted India’s ambition to lead globally in low-carbon steel. Key initiatives such as the Steel Collaboration Portal under the Steel Research and Technology Mission of India (SRTMI) and the Green Steel Taxonomy were also highlighted.
Shri Sandeep Poundrik, Secretary, Ministry of Steel, highlighted India’s robust 12%+ growth in steel production compared to global declines, with per capita consumption surpassing 100 kg. He stated that 47% of production comes from the secondary sector and assured Ministry’s support for R&D, sustainable raw material sourcing, and logistics facilitation. He appraised that studies shows the hydrogen costs is likely to drop to $2.5/kg in next five years, urging adoption for low-carbon transition.
Key industry concerns — including raw material sourcing, logistics bottlenecks, volatile pricing, and power tariff issues — were discussed by national and state-level associations. A session on proposed National Mission on Sustainable Steel (NMSS) formulated by this Ministry was also held and the perspectives of the industries were discussed.
Other sessions covered expression of interest for Green Hydrogen Pilot Projects in steel sector under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, Baseline carbon emission of Secondary Steel Industry (SSI) and R&D initiatives for SSIs.
As a historic moment in the Indian Steel Sector, three steel companies were awarded the first Green Steel Certificates for their efforts in reducing carbon emission under the Green Steel Taxonomy. The Ministry also unveiled the logo, brochure, and website for the upcoming international event “Bharat Steel”. The workshop concluded with a collective commitment to sustainable, competitive growth in the secondary steel sector.
