The Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI) hosted the Data User’s Conference on the Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) 2022-23 today at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan, PravasiBharatiya Kendra, New Delhi. The one-day event brought together approximately 300 participants including diverse group of stakeholders, policymakers, researchers, academicians, industry leaders, and representatives from international organizations.
The inaugural session started with the welcome address by Ms. Geeta Singh Rathore, Director-General of the National Sample Survey, with a brief presentation on overview of the usefulness of various survey data generated by NSO especially ASI data for industries for strategic planning, benchmarking and innovations. She highlighted the new initiatives of MoSPI to produce disaggregated level estimates, technological interventions and increased frequency. Some glimpses on the latest ASI 2022-23 results were also highlighted. Thereafter, Shri Saurabh Garg, Secretary in his opening remarksexpanded on the Ministry’s “Data for Decision Making” philosophy. He emphasized the extensive scope of NSO surveys, new initiatives taken by NSO and underscored the importance of various surveys of NSO in shaping private sector strategies and driving economic insights across various sectors. Secretary MoSPI also highlighted data as a powerful instrument for economic growth and national development. He also highlighted that theASI data helps businesses and industries make sound investment and production decisions by offering insights into the characteristics of industries, cost structure, labor availability, and emoluments. Additionally, ASI data allows industries to track their performance against industry averages, helping identify growth potential and guiding policy measures to enhance competitiveness.
A pivotal moment of the conference was the unveiling of the 75th anniversary logo of the National Sample Survey by Hon’ble Minister of State (IC) Rao Inderjit Singh. This act symbolized the organization’s enduring commitment to statistical excellence. In his inaugural address, the minister lauded the National Sample Survey’s 75-year legacy and articulated the importance of data as the cornerstone of modern governance and policy-making. He stressed the critical role of statistical information in understanding and advancing India’s economic development.The inaugural session was concluded with a Vote of Thanks by ADG Shri Kishore Kumar, who expressed gratitude to all participants for their contributions to the conference’s success.
The technical session started with apresentation from Sh. Sudeepta Bhattacharya, DDG (EnSD) on Survey Instruments, Key Results and Unit Level Data of ASI. Another highlight of the event was a special session by Prof. DibyenduMaiti from the Delhi School of Economics, who demonstrated practical applications of ASI data for strategic planning and policy-making. The technical session concluded with a presentation from Sh. Rajeev Kumar, DDG (NAD), about the use of industrial data for GDP calculation.
The panel discussion on “Leveraging ASI Data for Corporate Planning & Research”, generated engaging dialogue on the practical applications of ASI insights in corporate and academic spheres.
The conference provided a platform for meaningful discussions, Q&A sessions, and networking opportunities among stakeholders, fostering a collaborative approach to utilizing ASI data for India’s economic development. The event was streamed live on YouTube extending its reach to a wider audience and viewed by 1800 participants.
