TDB-DST sanctions Support for Indigenous Supercapacitor Energy Storage System by M/s Westech Power Management Pvt. Ltd, Pune, Maharashtra

Technology Development Board (TDB), Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India, has sanctioned financial assistance to M/s Westech Power Management Pvt. Ltd., Pune, Maharashtra, for the development of a “Mobile High-Power Containerised Supercapacitor Energy Storage System” aimed at addressing the critical energy needs of India’s industrial and defence sectors.
The project aims to indigenously design and commercialize a high-performance, modular supercapacitor-based energy storage system capable of rapid charging and discharging. Such systems are vital for pulse power, grid stabilization, industrial automation, and field-deployable defence operations, where conventional battery technologies face limitations. The innovation is expected to enhance energy resilience, reduce import dependency, and promote domestic manufacturing of advanced energy technologies.
Founded by Mr. Amit Kaul Bamzai and Dr. Rohini Bhat, Westech Power Management Pvt. Ltd. has been engaged in the development of high-power density cells and medium to high-voltage containerised supercapacitor systems through sustained in-house R&D. Its early-stage research was supported by the Naval Materials Research Laboratory (NMRL), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), marking a strong link between scientific innovation and national strategic applications.
The company currently holds two granted patents – “A High-Capacity Supercapacitor Cell and Method Thereof” and “108 Volt Supercapacitor Module and Method Thereof” – and has five additional patents pending in electrode materials, pulse power banks, and scalable supercapacitor modules.
Speaking on the agreement, Sh. Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary, TDB, stated: “This initiative embodies TDB’s mandate to promote the development and commercialization of indigenous technologies with national impact. Supercapacitor-based systems represent a strategic domain for India’s energy independence — combining scientific innovation with practical applications for defence and industry. Through such projects, TDB continues to enable India’s transition from technology importer to technology developer and exporter”
The promoters of Westech Power Management Pvt. Ltd. expressed their gratitude, saying: “TDB’s support will accelerate our journey from laboratory innovation to large-scale deployment. The project will help establish India’s capability in supercapacitor technology and contribute to building a sustainable, self-reliant energy ecosystem.”
By supporting the commercialization of indigenous supercapacitor technology, TDB reinforces its role in fostering Aatmanirbhar Bharat, promoting deep-tech entrepreneurship, and driving Make in India innovation for globally competitive, high-impact solutions.
