OPENING OF NEW PORTS
Government of India has accorded approval for development of Major Port at Vadhavan in Maharashtra on landlord Port development model due to its natural advantages and growing requirement of Import export trade of country. Galathea Bay in Great Nicobar Island of Andaman & Nicobar Islands has also been identified for development of an International Container Transhipment Terminal due to its strategic location. The details of total functional Major and Ports other than Major Ports (Non-Major Ports), State/UT-wise are at Annexure I.
The volume of import and export carried out through Major and Ports other than Major Ports (Non Major Ports) during the last three years is at Annexure II.
The Major Ports of India are regulated under Major Ports Authority Act, 2021. However, Ports other than Major Ports (Non-Major Ports) and their concessionaires are regulated by Sate Maritime Boards under respective State Governments. Under Sagarmala Programme, Ministry provides financial assistance to State government port infrastructure projects, coastal berth projects, road and rail projects, fishery harbours, skill development projects, Coastal Community Development, cruise terminal and projects such as Ro-Pax ferry services etc. Under the port modernization pillar of Sagarmala Programme, 16 projects worth Rs. 860 Cr. Have been financially supported through Sagarmala Scheme. Out of which, 10 projects worth Rs. 520 Cr. have been completed. The state-wise details are at Annexure III.
