Navjyot Bandiwadekar has won the Best Debut Director of an Indian Feature Film Award for his Marathi film ‘Gharat Ganpati’ at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2024. The award underscores the impact of Bandiwadekar’s directorial debut, marking him as a fresh and exciting voice in the film industry.
The Best Debut Director of an Indian Feature Film Award has been newly instituted for this edition of IFFI by National Film Development Corporation, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, to recognise the young filmmaking talent across India, acknowledging their contribution to the evolution of Indian cinema.
The Award, that carries a Certificate and Cash Prize of Rs. 5 lakhs was presented to Navjyot Bandiwadekar during the closing ceremony of the 55th IFFI, for his exceptional storytelling through his Marathi film ‘Gharat Ganpati’.
The Jury praised Bandiwadekar for his ability to create a touching narrative that bridges tradition and modern sensibilities, showcasing his talent as a director. “Bandiwadekar has expertly captured the complexities of familial bonds. His direction highlights the subtleties of family life while maintaining a deep emotional resonance, making the film a standout debut,” the Jury appreciated.

After reviewing all five films recommended by the preview committee, the Jury unanimously chose Bandiwadekar for his exceptional work. In its citation, the jury has lauded ‘Gharat Ganpati’ for its well-crafted storytelling and robust performances. “The film explores the theme of family unity amidst generational differences,” the Jury has mentioned in their citation.
The Debut Director Jury comprises of Shri Santosh Sivan (Chairperson), Cinematographer and Director; Shri. Suneel Puranik, Actor, Director and Producer; Shri. Sekhar Das, Film director and Scriptwriter; Shri. M. V. Raghu, Cinematographer and Director; Shri. Vinit Kanojiya, Filmmaker, Writer and Editor.
