Widely known as ‘Lokmanya’, Shri Bal Gangadhar Tilak was a towering nationalist, visionary leader, social reformer, and scholar. He played a pioneering role in mobilizing political consciousness among the masses during the Indian freedom struggle and was a staunch advocate of self-rule (Swaraj). His stirring call—“Swaraj is my birthright, and I shall have it!”— galvanized generations of Indians to rise against colonial rule.

The portrait of Lokmanya Tilak was unveiled in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan (then Parliament House) on 28 July 1956 by the then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the nation.

Earlier in the day, Speaker Shri Om Birla paid tributes, through a message on X, recalling Tilak’s immense role in India’s freedom movement and his legacy of public service. Shri Birla said, “His life is an unparalleled example of patriotism, fearlessness, and ideological steadfastness.”
