United Nations International Year of Cooperatives 2025

The Ministry of Cooperation has undertaken a range of special initiatives and events to commemorate the United Nations-International Year of Cooperatives (IYC) – 2025 with the theme “Cooperatives Build a Better World”, which was officially launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi at the ICA Global Cooperative Conference held in 2024. This year highlights the vital role of cooperatives in promoting inclusive, participatory, and sustainable development in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

To mark the IYC 2025, the Ministry prepared a comprehensive Annual Action Plan for IYC in collaboration with all the stakeholders of the Cooperative Sector which was released by Hon’ble Home and Cooperation Minister on 24th January 2025 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. For coordinated planning and implementation, the Ministry constituted IYC-National Cooperative Committee, IYC-National Execution Committee, and IYC-State Apex Committees. Further, actions for IYC were also included in Terms of References of the State Cooperative Development Committees and District Cooperative Development Committees.

Extensive awareness and outreach activities have been carried out across the country. The IYC logo has been prominently displayed on Indian Railways electronic tickets, official websites and correspondence of Central Ministries/Departments/PSUs, and on cooperative product packaging — including daily milk packets by Amul. The logo was also showcased during all matches of the Women’s Premier League 2025, broadcast across nine channels of Star Sports and Jio Hotstar.

Various major activities were organized by National Federations and States/UTs. Foundation stone of 25 PACS godowns with storage capacity of 62,500 metric tons in Bihar by Hon’ble Union Home and Cooperation Minister. Madhya Pradesh organized a state level conference in April under the chairmanship of the Hon’ble Home and Cooperation Minister. Union Home and Cooperation Minister chaired the Golden Jubilee celebration of IFFCO’s Kalol branch in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, and laid the foundation stone of the Beej Anusandhan Kendra.

A key initiative at the national level was the successful organization of the National Conference of State Cooperation Ministers on 30th June 2025 under the chairmanship of Hon’ble Home and Cooperation Minister, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. The foundation stone of country’s first cooperative university, “Tribhuvan Sahkari University” was laid by Hon’ble Home and Cooperation Minister on 05.07.2025 at Anand, Gujarat. A national event was also held on 06th July, 2025 on the occasion of 4th Foundation Day of the Ministry of Cooperation.

A dedicated plantation drive under “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign during IYC is being undertaken with active participation of all the States/UTs, National Cooperative Federations and other cooperative stakeholders. More than 25 States/UTs have sent their action plan for this plantation drive under IYC-2025.

Further, initiatives such as the capacity building and awareness generation, walkathons, cyclothons, cleanliness drives under “Swachhta me Sahkar” campaign, cooperative exhibitions, and youth and women engagement programs have been organised nationwide. A special edition of Kurukshetra magazine has been published in July 2025 to commemorate IYC and to highlight cooperative sector achievements. The details of major activities undertaken and reported by States/UTs to the Ministry under celebration of IYC-2025 are given in as Annexure-A. During the remainder of the year, various similar events and activities would be organized by the States/UTs under IYC–2025.

Efforts are being undertaken for developing Benchmarking Criteria for Cooperative Sector. Efforts are also being made for preparation of Business Reform Action Plan for Cooperative Sector for year 2026 onwards. A consolidated annual report on the activities carried out throughout the year by all the stakeholders is proposed to be prepared at the end of the year.
