“If you’re skating on thin ice, you may as well dance.” With these daring words from director Michael Gracey’s Instagram post, Better Man boldly set the tone as the opening film of the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), earning thunderous applause. This imaginative biopic of musical legend Robbie Williams takes an unexpected twist, featuring a CGI monkey in the lead role.

At a press conference held during the festival, producer Paul Currie shared insights into the making of this cinematic marvel. “We wanted to make a film with edge and honesty,” he said. “The idea of portraying an icon like Robbie Williams as a monkey, a non-human character trying to be human, was seen as absurd and risky. But we took that risk and created something extraordinary. Against all odds, the film is resonating with audiences worldwide.”

Currie explained that Better Man is more than just a musical biopic; it’s a poignant story of resilience and self-discovery. It’s about embracing who you are and overcoming adversity, an inspiring journey told through music and imagination, he added. Currie highlighted that hundreds of artists collaborated to create the stunning visual effects.

Praising director Michael Gracey’s vision, Currie described him as “a master of choreographing shots,” with a unique talent for blending music, dance, and cinematography. “Michael’s real-life friendship with Robbie Williams added depth and authenticity to the film. It’s what makes Better Man more than just a story, it’s a heartfelt celebration of a complex individual.”

Raechelle Banno who plays the love interest of the protagonist, echoed this sentiment. “As an actor, I connected deeply with the story of a young man on the brink of fame, fighting with his inner struggles.” Banno added, “This film isn’t just about Robbie Williams’ genius as a musician; it’s about the universal struggles we all face. It’s a story that invites us to see ourselves in its characters, regardless of where we come from.”

In his concluding remarks, Paul Currie said “The hero’s journey is universal, whether in India, Australia, or anywhere in the world. Through ‘Better Man’, we hope audiences resonate with the complexities of life and find inspiration in the music and the message.”

As the opening film of IFFI 2024, ‘Better Man’ has set a high benchmark for the festival. With its daring concept, eye catching visuals, and emotional core, it serves as a testament to the power of storytelling to break boundaries and challenge conventions.
