Secretary-General Strongly Condemns Deadly Suicide Bombings in Pakistan

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres:

The Secretary-General strongly condemns the suicide bombings at Hangu mosque in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and at a religious procession in Mastung, Balochistan, Pakistan.  The attacks reportedly killed at least 57 people, including children, and injured around 70 others.  It is particularly abhorrent that the attacks occurred at a place of worship and during the celebration of Prophet Muhammad’s birthday.

He extends his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a prompt recovery to those injured.

The Secretary-General reiterates the solidarity of the United Nations with the Government and people of Pakistan in their efforts to address terrorism and violent extremism.
