Regional Media workshop of PIB Kochi held at Vadakara, Kozhikode

Kozhikode Sub Collector Chelsasini V said that media, especially the regional media played a critical role in imparting effective communication about Government schemes at the grassroots level of the society. While delivering the inaugural address at the Regional Media workshop for regional media persons organized at Vadakara, Kozhikode, Chelsasini V pointed out that the Government was implementing many schemes aimed at improving the lives of common people. If there is more awareness about such schemes, more people would benefit from them and hence, the media should give more space and time for such reports, she added.
The Workshop was organized by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Cochin, under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in association with the Central Bureau of Communication, Wayanad Office, and Vadakara Press Club at Hotel Crystal Suites.
Shri. V. Palanichamy, Additional Director General, PIB Kerala-Lakshadweep Region, presided over the function. In his presidential address, he said that the media should ensure more space and time for developmental communication and socially relevant subjects including social security schemes. Stating that we were living in an era of innovation, Shri. Palanichamy urged media persons to specialize in a particular subject and become masters in the same.
Padma Shree awardee Smt Meenakshi Amma and senior media person Shri. K. Vijayakumar was also felicitated.
As a part of the workshop, Shri Muraleedharan T. M., Lead District Divisional Manager, led the first session on “Central Govt Schemes – An Overview” and spoke extensively on various Central Schemes including Prime Minister’s Employment Generations Programme, PM Mudra Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, PM Vishwa Karma Yojana among others. While detailing the Viksit Bharat Sankap Yathra envisaged by the Central Government, which already started rolling from all parts of the country, Shri Muraleedharan said the Yathra is a big step towards the Central Government’s vision of reaching the unreached.
Senior Journalist Shri Ashok Srinivas spoke on ‘‘Creating Public Awareness on Government Schemes through Media’’. He urged the media persons to devote time to study about the various welfare schemes. He added that the journalists have the responsibility to introspect how effectively the reports about the schemes can be given so that more people get the benefit.
Journalist Shri N. P. C. Ranjith led the third session on ‘‘Emerging Trends in Media and New Age Tools for Effective Journalism’. He spoke in detail about the transformational changes in the media scene with the entry of social media and how to prevent fake news. He also emphasized the need to be careful in reporting news to protect the credibility of the mainstream media.
Smt. Rashmi Roja Thushara Nair, Director (M&C), PIB Cochin gave an introduction to various media Organizations under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
In the ‘Sharing of Experiences’ segment of the Workshop, Shri. MV Prajith Kumar, Field Publicity Officer of CBC Wayanad, Shri Naseer Babu , Part-time Correspondent of All India Radio News in Kozhikode addressed the function representing various media units under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in Kozhikode. Father Bijo Thomas representing the community radio station, Radio Mattoli also attended the programme and shared his experiences.
Beneficiaries of central government schemes Shri Arjun KP (Prime Ministers Employment Generation Programme- PMEGP), Shri Jinesh P ( PMAY ) shared their experiences about how they benefitted from the schemes.
The Workshop was organized in association with the Press Club, Vadakara, and CBC, Wayanad Office. Shri P. K. Radhakrishnan, President, Vadakara Press Club, Shri P. K. Vijesh, Secretary, Vadakara Press Club, and Smt Shamila K. Y., Media and Communication Officer, PIB Cochin also addressed the gathering.
PIB periodically organizes such workshops in various districts to build a direct interface with regional media persons as part of its outreach activities.
